Garber's Ice Cream opened its first ice cream shop in 1912 in Moorefield, West Virginia. In the 1920s, the shop was moved to Winchester, Virginia. In the 1930s, Charles Garber, his wife Nora, who did the bookkeeping, and most of his 12 children helped to make ice cream. Five of the children made lifetime careers in the production and distribution of Garber's Ice Cream. Donald Garber, the youngest son, took over the business in 1985. After Donald's retirement, his youngest son David took over the business and currently heads all aspects of its operation.
Garber's Ice Cream currently makes 42 flavors of ice cream and is one of the major ice cream manufacturers in the Shenandoah Valley. Garber's also produces sherbets, yogurts, and no sugar added ice cream and manufactures low-fat items for schools from New York to Florida. Trucks distribute the ice cream products over a 100-mile radius around Winchester. They also manufacture ice cream products under private label for several companies on the east coast. In addition, Garber's manufactures products under the label Frederick Farms. Garber's Ice Cream products use "real ice cream mix" in their manufactured products and carry the Virginia's Finest seal.
